Piñata Party

May 3rd, 2012 | Posted by Hello Love in Paper - (1 Comments)

Piñatas are traditionally made of papier-mâché and decorated, filled with toys and/or candy, and then broken during a celebration. But who says they have to be big? Check out these fun (pint size) piñata party favors.

I stumbled upon this great DIY tutorial that you can use for your next fiesta!

For this project, you’ll need:
- Small balloons
-flour & water for papier mâché
-newspaper or any thin paper
-candy to go inside the pinata
-scissors
-Elmer’s glue
-tissue paper
-glasses or a base to hold the piñatas while they dry

Step 1: Blow up balloon to desired size and tie with a knot. Ours were about 5-6 inches long. Rip paper into small pieces – strip or square shapes are great, but really any shape will do. Mix equal parts of water and flour for papier mâché glue paste.

Step 2: Start gluing pieces of paper onto balloon, allowing an opening around the balloon tie for candy once it’s dry. After your first layer dries, repeat the process until is thick enough to hold candy.

Step 3: While your papier mâché dries, you can get your tissue paper ready. We batch fringed tissue paper by folding a long strip of paper (about 4 inches wide) in half several times. (Save some time by using multi-blade shreading scissors!)

Step 4: Once your papier mâché is dry, you can start layering your fringed tissue paper. Always start layering the fringe from the bottom up. Regular white school glue works perfectly. Continue until the entire balloon is covered.

Step 5: With a needle, gently poke a hole on the balloon to deflate it. Pull balloon out and we’re ready to add the candy!

Step 6: To create a handle for the mini piñata, thread a tag in a ribbon and make a knot halfway. Tie the ends of the ribbon onto a candy.

Step 7: Now you’re ready to add candy and seal the pinata. Add the handle last and seal the pinata with a matching piece of tissue paper.

Enjoy!

frida-esque

Frida Kahlo is a symbol of beauty, creativity, and strength and infamous for her emblematic self portraits. She inspires my work with flowers and head pieces more specifically. Since we are celebrating a week of Cinco de Mayo,  here on the blog, I decided to  treat myself to a Frida-esque make-over!  I rounded up one of my good friends and fellow florist Nicole Hammontree with The Wooly Thistle to help me create a few master pieces.

oh the (five) places we will go

April 30th, 2012 | Posted by Hello Love in Style - (Comments Off)

Mexico. My happy place. My husband teases me because I talk about escaping to Mexico all the time. I love it. Last year for our one year anniversary we went to Rivera Maya. I had never been to Cancun and I was a little nervous. Hoping for a “honeymoon” and not a “spring break” I wasn’t sure what we were getting or about our safety with all of the press surrounding the area at that time. What we got was one of the best vacations I’ve ever had, completely safe and perfect. And get this — wait for it — it was all inclusive. I think that was the best part. It was like going to the best restaurants and hotels for days and never blinking an eye. At any time of stress or just seeking a moment of peaceful bliss this is the place I think of. So after a gorgeous wedding this weekend (will share soon) wishing two very dear friends a happy new life together and sending them off on their honeymoon – I had vacations on the brain. Today I share with you five places that I think need to be on your list for Mexico.

**In honor of Cinco de Mayo Hello Love celebrates Mexico this week — thus I picked five places!**

1. The One and Only Palmilla – it’s on the bucket list. More here and here.

2. Rosewood Mayakoba – you get to take this adorable little boat to your room —- WHAT??!?! We visited while we were there and they have a GREAT little tequila bar that I highly recommend. More here and here.

3. Deseo – I wish I knew more about it but what I know is that the decor is KILLER. I have to say I completely judge a book by it’s cover. When searching for a hotel the first thing I do is type in the names and hit Google images. It’s what makes me happy. A beautiful hotel is a weakness for me but of course it must be comfortable. Deseo seems minimal but perfect. See the entire hotel here. FAB.

4. Maroma – with a 7,000 square foot spa I don’t think you have to twist my arm to go here. More on Maroma found here and here.

5. Grand Velas Rivera Maya – This list would not be complete without showing the INSANE spa at the luxury all inclusive (yes, those two words actually do go hand in hand) at Grand Velas. By far, the moment that set that trip apart from so many. Read about our entire experience here. And this is a pretty great write up on Grand Velas here too.

lord of the ring

April 27th, 2012 | Posted by Hello Love in Style | Uncategorized - (1 Comments)

When I decided to propose to my girlfriend I knew the ring would have to be something special and unique. I researched for months until I ran across a little antique jewelry shop called Erie Basin in Red Hook Brooklyn. I was immersed in this tiny world of antique rings and wondered which one would win me a bride! Erie Basin’s website and blog are beautiful but the shop, and the relics in it, transport one to another time and place!  – Adam Rico
